Over the last six months I have become involved in working on the issue of climate change. I serve on the Cincinnati Archdiocesan Social Actian Commission, and we have created a Climate Change Task Force to help parishes in the archdiocese become aware of the issue of climate change and to commit to doing something about it. We are one of the pilot dioceses for the Catholic Climate Covenant and the St. Francis Pledge. http://catholicclimatecovenant.org/ I was able to go with small groups of Task Force members to visit the Cincinnati offices of the tw0 Ohio Senators, Voinovich and Brown. In addition to the archdiocesan effort, I am also a member of the steering committee helping to design the Ignatian Solidarity Network spring teach-in on environmental justice and sustainability at Wheeling College March 5-8. Climate change is not an easy sell.

Climate change impact on poor
Dear Joefolz,
Thanks for posting this message and for helping to get the ball rolling on the blog feature of this new site.
Thanks too for mentioning your participation in the Catholic Coalition on Climate Change. It seems that one "value added" that Jesuits/Ignatian family might be able to add to this effort is the disproportionate suffering felt by the poor as a result of climate change. For instance, pastoralists in Kenya loose cattle (their livelihood) due to heat stress and drought - but they have very little if any carbon footprint. They have not created the problem but they bear the cost. The loss of rural livelihoods such as these, drive people to the urban centers which do emit large carbon emissions, due to the very nature of city life.
